Apache - Virtual Host or /etc/hosts

Post by Mark Worsdal » Sun, 27 Dec 1998 04:00:00

Hi all,

I have 2 machines on my network win98 (10.0.1.250) and linux
(10.0.1.254) and these entries are in linux's /etc/hosts file.

127.0.0.1       localhost       localhost.localdomain
10.0.1.254      linux.sparebedroom.home linux
10.0.1.250      worsdall.demon.co.uk    win98

Now I want to be able to through Apache server on linux be able from
win98 (MS IE4) be able to just type:-

http://shadow.org
http://worsdall.org
http://spartan.ltd
http://hinwick.col

All these sites will be stored on linux and delivered through Apache,
linux has no direct access to the Internet other than through win98,
this link isn't currently working, though win98 access's the internet
fine. Should somewhere in linux I add a defualt gateway command like to
10.0.1.250 as the default gateway?

Should I have some extra entries in /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf about
virtual hosts etc.

BTW: I cannot at this moment access the server from win98 though ps -ax
reports it is running.

You are welcome :-))

I wrote and it worked ;-)
But if you have a specific problem it is quite easier to respond

I think the others who have responded are missing the obvious. You
are trying to use your Win98 machine as an internet server for your
local network.  Ain't going to work.  If you switch it around so
the linux box is the internet server you should be able to access
the internet with both boxes.  Win98 is not going to work as a
gateway, noway, nohow.

Why not it works for other win95 machines on my network. I am running
aGate on the win98 box you see.

So lets try again.

I have told the linux box (Now known as jilldando) that it's default
gateway is 10.0.1.250 (win98)

win98 is running aGate (Which can allow ftp, http smtp ntp nntp etc)

Microsoft works with Microsoft. Linux works with everything.  The best
way to set it up  is to have Linux as you gateway/masq box.  Set up
Linux with IP Masquing, and hook to the internet thru it.

Why would anyone want to use Microsoft for a gateway, anyhow?

1) The linux box is in the sparebedroom out of the way and also does not
have a modem or a phone line to connect to.

2) I am reliant on other people to open boxes for me and swap hardware.

3) I am responisible for some daily running of websites and have my
win98 box setup (for 3 years now) to do the job, so transistion will
have to be done slowly and not interfere with my daily web work.

Thats is why I would want to do this, perhaps you should have said "What
reasons have put you in the situation where you have to do this and
would you rather have the linux box be your internet gateway?"
:-)

Rather academic since installing MSIE5 Beta2 I have been unable to get
OMNI's web server to run on the win98 box, even after uninstalling it
the win98 box will not let it start. Apache V1.3.3 win32 does, however
work complaining about the host name worsdall.demon.co.uk not being able
to be resolved. STILL THIS IS NOT RELEVENT in this group.

Hi all

just a begginer to linux.

i have set up linux and networking. I cant ping both machines (win95) and
Linux from each other.  I can telnet from w95 to linux and can ftp from each
other. Problem is the web browser cant find the server on Linux.  Keeps
telling me the server connection could not be established.  Have i missed a
simple step?  I noticed in the users there is no alias or group for http ...
should there be one? ftp and telnet etc do.

thanks

please help!

Apache usually runs as 'nobody' as long as it is started as root (usually in
the init scripts).

Have you checked that a httpd process is running on the linux box? Use 'ps
aux |grep httpd' to find out. If not, you will need to look in the logs to
see what may be going wrong.

Another common problem is that the apache software has trouble finding out
what its hostname is. There is a ServerName directive in the httpd.conf file
that can overcome this. Otherwise, dig into your logs looking for lines with
the 'httpd' string in them.

Try to invoke the webserver locally with (assuming port 80)

telnet localhost 80

if you get a connected message enter a character and you should see
a HTML version message.

1. Apache 1.3b2: Default Host and all virtual hosts serve only first virtual hosts pages?

Hello.

Have been running 1.2b8 for a intranet and decided to move upto 1.3b2. I
have several name based virtual hosts that have been working under
1.2b8. After compiling and installing 1.3b2 my virtual hosts do not
work. In fact what happens is that even though DocumentRoot and default
server name is different, eg: www.serverA.net pointing to /www/default,
Apache 1.3b2 will always take me to the first defined virtual host as if
it's locked to it no matter what virtual host I try to browse. What
gives? Please post and E-Mail.

In /etc/hosts for my machines IP address I have

A.B.C.D         www.default.net www.virtA.net www.virtB.net

In ../conf/httpd.conf I have;

<VirtualHost www.virtA.net>

DocumentRoot /usr/local/www/virtA
ServerName www.virtA.net
ErrorLog logs/virtA.error.log
TransferLog logs/virtA.access.log
</VirtualHost>

<VirtualHost www.virtB.net>

DocumentRoot /usr/local/www/virtB
ServerName www.virtB.net
ErrorLog logs/virtB.error.log
TransferLog logs/virtB.access.log
</VirtualHost>
