eth0: transmit timed out, Tx_status 00 status 2019 Tx FIFO

I have recently have switched between dhcpcd .70 with kernel-2.0.37 and
dhcpcd 1.3+pump with kernel 2.2.5 in an attempt to locate the root of my

connection problems. Usually after an hour, some times after 40hours of
being connected
the following error is dumped to the current console.

eth0: transmit timed out, Tx_status 00 status 2000 Tx FIFO room
3068.<5>eth0: transmit timed out, Tx_status 00 status 2000 Tx FIFO room
3068.<5>eth0: transmit timed out, Tx_status 00 status 2000 Tx FIFO room
3068.<5>eth0: transmit timed out, Tx_status 00 status 2000 Tx FIFO room
3068.

This occurs with both kernels after which the connection dies. The error
occurs sooner if I am sending data upstream, usualy via FTP upload.
Suggestions? Getting sick of
babbysitting my network status every time I try to download/upload
something.

I have a laptop using the 3c589 (3com etherlink) pcmcia-cs network
driver, I'm using Time Warner's RoadRunner Cable Internet Service.
