Netscape: bus error with java

Post by Jeff McDona » Wed, 24 Jan 1996 04:00:00

I am running Netscape 2.0b6 and Red Hat 2.1.  When I try to access
http://sun.java.com (or any page using java) Netscape exits with an error
message 'Bus error'.  Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Thanks!

This is a known bug in netscape.  They mention it in the release notes.  I *really*
with they would fix it.   Anyway, it only affects linux when running in 16bpp
mode.  Netscape w/java work fine in 8bpp but netscape rapidly runs out of colors
in 8bpp mode.

Are you running X in 8 bpp mode?  Although I'm not sure of the current
status, prior versions of Netscape had problems like this when attempting to
run Java code if X was configured to display more than 256 colors.

Good luck,
John

It may not be the 16bpp probelm which everyone will tell you about.
I found netscape 2.06 (and 2.05) will bus error upon any
java related activity if the JDK java classes are referenced in the
CLASSPATH environment variable.

Removing the JDK reference (probably /usr/local/java/classes) from
your CLASSPATH is not a problem since the java* scripts append it
anyway.
