Samba w/ DOS box - what does DOS need?

Post by Ari Yochanan Shapi » Tue, 10 Oct 1995 04:00:00

I am trying to set up my linux box as a file server for my DOS box.
I have installed samba and running it from my linux box seems to
work fine.  The INSTALL.txt file mentions using a file called
'net.exe' on the DOS box.  Where is this program and is there
something that you can use as an alternative?

NET.EXE comes with IBM Lan Manager, MS Lan Manager, or Windows for
Workgroups -- all of these use the same basic networking protocol,
which is NETBUEI.  This is the same protocol that Samba emulates.

I'm not sure how to get a straight DOS box running, but I know you can
get Win for Wkgroups running with Samba if you install it, and fetch
Microsoft's free TCP/IP stack (the thing they codename 'Wolverine')
and install it over the networking that WfWG comes with.

Good luck.

I simply don't think this is possible.  Samba requires TCP/IP
services (as well as NetBEUI support) which while available for WFWG, they
require the Win32s package which obviously isn't available in DOS.

It is possible! Just get MS-Client or a Lan Manager client from the microsoft
ftp site (ftp.microsoft.com ?). It's all in the samba docs!!!!

As it happens...  Microsoft will let you have a copy of their Workgroup
Client for DOS _for free_!  Read the licence agreement first, though (I
don't remember what it says).  It should let you connect to the Linux host,
assuming the Ethernet card you use is supported.

What amounted to some hair-pulling :) when I tried installing the
client when I had a 3c509 was the the driver diskette didn't have support
for this netcard. So if you want to use a 3c509 and when the install
program shows you the drivers, DO NOT select any (there's only support for
the 501 and 503 I think), instead, select "Other Driver" at the bottom
of the screen and put in your Etherdisk. After the install program copies
the protocol.ini from the etherdisk, put back the second driver disk (disk 3)

The client is made up of 4 disks, 1 install, 2 drivers, 1 novell connectivity

Sure it's possible to connect to a Samba server via a DOS-hosted TCP/IP
client.  I do it all the time.  All you need is the Microsoft Network
Client, or the MS LanMan Client, both of which are available free from
ftp.microsoft.com.  Sorry, I don't remember the exact directory though.

1. HELP: Connectivity between DOS/DOS and DOS/Linux

HI there,

In about march we should be getting a second PC in our house. I was
concidering trying to network the two machines. One of the machines
is going to be a DOS/Windows affair while the other one is hoping
to become a DOS and Linux setup. I have a few questions that I hope
that someone out there can answer. (The kind of network I'm concid-
ering is peer-to-peer, I think)

1) Using Novell Netware light on the DOS/Windows machine, could it
connect to the Linux machine using standard networking stuff? Would
I be able to have netware on my DOS partition of my Linux/DOS machine
so that when I boot it up using DOS I'm still connected?

2) If I were using the Linux front end for DOOM, could I still play
a multiplayer game across the network? Or would I have to go back to
DOS?

3) Just out of curiosity, could anyone give me info on cost. I've
got a home made estimate (made from various sources) of :

Cabling (roughly)                               :20
                                                ----
Total                                           136

This is a rough estimate, if anyone can confirm or deny this value
please set me straight.

Answers would be much appersiated as it will influence my decision
as to weather to get the network and/or to get Linux.
