Portable Add-ons Ethernet+ PCMCIA driver?

Post by James Wootto » Thu, 19 Jun 1997 04:00:00

Anyone using one of these pcmcia cards succesfully with Linux?
I've got a Tecra 730XCDT with Redhat 4.1 and it's the old two fingered
salute to any of the exisiting drivers, except for the fujitsu driver
which loads but won't work.  Can't get any info as to the chip-set etc.
out of the company, who's tech support is on a par with most.

Any help will be appreciated.

Regards,  James

Portable Add-ons Ethernet+ PCMCIA driver?

We have noticed that all of our Linux machines regularly generate
the following messages to /var/adm/syslog.

 Jun 17 02:08:41 jmw3 inetd[85]: /usr/sbin/nmbd: exit status 0x1

Our network connection is 3c509 ethernet. (Counting all the "last
message repeated n times" I would say we get several hundred per day).

Anyone know what causes this -- or better still -- how to stop it!

thanks

nmbd is a daemon involved in the SMB protocol - SMB is
Server Message Block - the old Lan Manager protocol - the
core of Microsoft's file sharing - essentially their reinvention
of NFS I think. smbd is the daemon that actually does the file
work - nmbd is involved in naming (hence the 'n' at the beginning).
Anyway, if you aren't using SMB, you could stop using smbd
and nmbd (check your startup scripts and/or your inetd.conf).

Best of luck,

To stop it, edit inetd.conf in /etc and comment out the lines that start
with netbios-ssn and netbios-ns.  They are the daemons for using Samba.

1. Third party vendors for RS/6000 43P add-ons ...

Hello,

We are purchasing a RS/6000 43P Model 260 and we are trying to bring it in under
the alotted cost.

My question is are there any good third party vendors for memory (they quoted
256MB (2x128MB) SDRAM DIMMS at $5120) and a 35GB DLT Drive (they quoted
$11850).  If we could get a good price on these items from a third party then we
use existing money for other things.  Can you help me?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Brett
