3c509b optimized kernel driver

Anybody knows how to quick fix the 3c509 driver to make it use the much
larger buffer on the 3c509b?

1. kernel w/3c509b driver problems

I'm running Slackware 8.0 on a 486/66 DX machine, and I just got an
Etherlink III ISA 10baseT/10base2 (BNC) combo card.  I've tried compiling
two kernels, 2.2.19 and 2.4.9, with the driver for this card, and when I try
to boot the newly compiled kernel, it says "Error 0x40".  I have disabled
PnP on the card, set everything up (using the DOS install disk) so that
there're no conflicts, but it still gives me that same error.  Any ideas?
