How to fix: DIP: tty: set_disc(0): I/O error

Can someone please explain me why the following happens:

bash# /sbin/dip -t -v
DIP: Dialup IP Protocol Driver version 3.3.7-uri (05 Apr 94)
Written by Fred N. van Kempen, MicroWalt Corporation.

DIP: name=root home=/tmp
     host=thuis.sci.kun.nl IP=127.0.0.1
     prot=SLIP MTU=296

Modem set to "HAYES".
DIP [0   ]> port cua1

Quote:>> port cua1

PORT: terminal port set to "cua1".
DIP: tty: open: /dev/cua1 (3) DIP: tty: open: IBUF=1024 OBUF=1020
DIP: tty: set_speed: 38400
DIP: tty: set_databits: 8
DIP: tty: set_stopbits: 1
DIP: tty: set_parity: N
DIP [0   ]> reset
Quote:>> reset
DIP [0   ]> default
>> default

Destination net/address set to 'default'
DIP [0   ]> term
Quote:>> term

[ Entering TERMINAL mode.  Use CTRL-] to get back ]

Now I log in, and start SLIP on my internet provider. Then I press CTRL-]

[ Back to LOCAL mode. ]
DIP [0   ]> get $locip 131.174.78.19

Quote:>> get $locip 131.174.78.19

About to set variable $locip to 131.174.78.19
DIP [0   ]> get $rmtip 131.174.76.11
Quote:>> get $rmtip 131.174.76.11

About to set variable $rmtip to 131.174.76.11
DIP [0   ]> mode SLIP
Quote:>> mode SLIP

bash# DIP: Interface sl0

Now I type in a different window the following: ping some_machine, and then
DIP tells me:

DIP: tty: set_disc(0): I/O error
DIP: tty: set_speed: 0
DIP: tty: set_state: I/O error
DIP: tty: hangup(DROP): I/O error
DIP: tty: set_disc(0): I/O error

and then it exits.

Why does set_disc give this error message? Why would it want to set any
line disciplines in the first place?

1. DIP: tty: set_disc(0): I/O error

I am using slackware 2.0 and have been trying to connect using SLIP.
The dip script is being executed by hand for tracing.  The following
error messages are displyed when I try to connect to a http server using
Mosaic.

DIP: tty: set_disc(0): I/O error
DIP: tty: set_state: I/O error
DIP: tty: restore: I/O error

My environment is the basic slackware software.  Any clues on a fix?
