How to limit Internet access ?

Post by DS » Fri, 21 Apr 2000 04:00:00

I am almost there, just a few more questions !!! :-)

We are using our linux box as an internet gateway/firewall with ipchains and
masquerading.

It is, also, use as DHCP server.

Is it possible to limit the internet access to specific computers.  Since
the ip address could change on each reboot, how can we block access ?

Thank you

have not done this so just a few thoughts....

might be possible to block by name not by adress,
or give certain hosts a ipadress from a different range,
or not give them routing info.

but....

i imply you use  a small network, with private numbers
(like 192.168.x.x).
whats the point in using dhcp at all?
i tried it, it works -
so i know it can be done.

but you dont have a limit of adresses, and need your hosts to give them
back after a while, right?
so use fixed adresses, might make things easier.

How to limit Internet access ?

I saw on ZDTV that Squid could be used for this, but giving that you are
using DHCP you may have to specify ranges of addresses to limit.

1. Limited internet access

Hi,

I work for a chain of retail stores. We are in the process of changing
the point of sale system to a Linux solution (Mandrake 5.3). We want to
give the stores the ability to access two things via the internet (using
Netscape).

1. The company's intranet site (ie www2.fakename.com).
2. E-mail for the store (smtp.fakename.com).

What is the easiest way to limit the stores to these two things? We are
connecting via a local ISP. I have a call into them to see if they
can/will provide any blocking services but I need a "plan B" in case
they can't do anything for us.

Thanks,
Mike
