Win 98 PC cannot see Linux

Post by David Syrat » Wed, 26 Aug 1998 04:00:00

I have 2 pC's connected on a network. I can ping the WIN98 box from the
Linux Box and vice versa, but the Linux box does not appear in the Network
Neighborhood on the W98 box.

Any assistance appreciated.

Check out the Samba HOWTO.  You need to use Samba in order to share
disks and printers between Linux and Network Neighborhood.

If you are using Samba make shure that you have browsing set to yes.

Solution,

In regedit create the key:

/HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/VxD/VNETSUP/EnablePlainText
with value is 1 (type is DWORD).
Good luck

Actually, the registry hack outlined above is useful mosly for NT access
to
samba. I've never heard of win 9x using ncrypted passwds.

Anyway, david, try editing c:\windows\hosts to reflect your
machines' ip addresses.

Also, try this: Start->Run: \\111.222.333.444\share

where 111.222.333.444 is your samba machine, and share is one of the
samba shares in /etc/smb.conf.

If that works, your problem is in resolving the Linux ip.
Fixing hosts should correct this.

1. Can Win'98 files be seen in Linux?

 Hi ,
I have a big problem installing my cheap n/w Encore ENL832-TX Fast ethernet
cardcard.
To get it recognized by linux
I want to :
1. Upgrade to Linux 5.2 but I don't have a CD. So I want a n/w connection.
For that as I want a n/w card.. for that v5.2..
2. upgrade the kernel .. (as v5.2 will do)

but as i can access the n/w from windows 98 which is on the same hard
drive, IS  THRE ANYWAY THAT I CAN GET THE UPGRADE FILE DOWNLOADED IN
WINDOWS 98 AND CAN USE IN LINUX BY ACCESSING ITS FILES/.
thanks for your help
