Help - IP Aliasing and RedHat 6.1

Post by Stephen J. Thompso » Fri, 03 Dec 1999 04:00:00

Hello all,

I have just installed RH 6.1 and found that IP aliasing does not seem
to work. Can anyone confirm this? if so is there a fix?

Thanks.

Stephen.

RH6.1 has had a sequence of problems with initscripts, aliasing now
working being among them. Install the latest version from Redhat's
update page and hope...

1. setting up virtual IP addresses/aliases with RedHat 6.1 linuxconf

Hello,

I tried to add some virtual IP range on a RedHat 6.1 using linuxconf:
linuxconf seems to make some config-files (ifcfg-eth*:*) in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts and runs some scripts in the same
directory  using the information from
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth*:*

when I use an range of IP like *.*.*.28-32 I get the following error
messages in /var/log/messages :

ifup-aliases: /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-aliases:
ipseen_130_37_129_65-74=ifcfg-eth0:0: command not found
ifup-aliases: error in ifcfg-eth0:0: already seen ipaddr
130.37.129.65-74 in -74

when I use just one IP number this is the error message:

ifup-aliases: error in ifcfg-eth0:0: didn't specify device or ipaddr

I had no problems with adding virual IP numbers in RedHat 6.0 using
linuxconf.

For now I solved problem by editing /etc/rc.d/init.d/network by hand and
ignore the fancy Redhat scripting and just put some hard 'ifconfig
eth0:0 x.x.x.23 netmask 255.255.255.0  broadast x.x.x.255 up' in it..
But some how this is not the way RedHat would have intented
it...otherwise I would still be using slackware ;-)

Anyone problems with making virtual IP aliases with linuxconf in RedHat
6.1 too, or is it just me again ;-) ?
