According to the netgear site there is a problem with come FA311 cards
reporting themselves as Fa312 cards. This could be the cause of the problem.
There is a fix here

Then Products->Desktop/PC Server cards->Fa311,Support
sorry their site doesn't support direct URLs.
Ignore the stuff about windows the fix is valid anyway.
