PPP not escaping properly on an Xylogics Annex

[posted to linux.dev.ppp, got no response]

I dial in to a Xylogics Annex server with the following script:

/usr/sbin/pppd -d /dev/modem 57600 crtscts modem defaultroute \
 asyncmap 0x40

/var/adm/debug says this:

I patched the kernel to report which characters were being received with
escapes. 12.6% was escaped, ie all characters under 32 and the escape
character itself, plus one other. I made it keep a list to be sure.

Now I seem to have requested that only ^H be escaped.

What's going wrong?

The maintainers of the Xylogics machine have looked in the manual and found
out that it's configured to escape all control-characters by default, unless
requested otherwise. Which, AFAIK, I have done.

Right now my throughput on a 28k8 link is 2.8k/s, which imho is too low.

Thanks for your interest.
