just a few pointers and thoughts:
1. I'd choose either the existent w95, or zipslack (a minimal Linux
system from http://www.slackware.com/) with samba add-on. PLIP stands
for parallel-line internet protocol and it comes with linux. I've never
tried PLIP, so I can't make any guarantees, but I use samba regularly
and its doing windows networking perfectly. Now, installing a linux
system is never easy, especially on older machines, however, you'd learn
a lot of interesting stuff (non-GUI learning, that is) and become more
and more creative in doing computing. If you have the LINUX-HowTo's on
your mandrake, you have a way to learn about doing PLIP, setting up a
firewall with IPChains and even doing ICS (which is called masquerading
un linux). Theyre also availabe on the internet.
2. if its linux, my first guess is PLIP.
<http://www.icewalkers.com/Linux/Howto/PLIP-Install-HOWTO.html> Or buy a
cheap PCI network card for your G2000, cut an ethernet cable to make it
cross-over, and do ethernet -- this is what I have at home. I have this
link dealing with home networking, including direct parallel/serial
cable connection:
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Heights/5704/dcc1.html .
3. if its linux, use samba (can download it off you linux distribution
site, or CDROM)
4. windows XP has an easy setup procedure for ICS, and it even does
DHCP. In this case, your other machine should only have a compatible IP
address and net mask, and point to the XP machine as a gateway. Or, if
you think the G2000 wastes energy, and if it has Linux on it, you can
get it use pppd to do the dialup, and masquerading for ICS. It'll serve
as your IP gateway in this case. this of course means more reading
through HowTo's and manual pages (use the `man pppd' and `man ipchains'
commands, and check the masquerading and firewall howto's). I have a
bunch of windows machines behind a linux firewall at work, and boy I'm
happy about this now that the worm is out there in the wild.
