I would like to install plip on my Linux (Kernel level 1.2.1).
Could some please point me to the right document on the installation
procedure or tell me how to proceed ?

Many thanks,
Wayne Ling

Read the NET-2 howto.

I have plip compiled after configuring the kernel.  While booting up,
there is a message indicating the plip driver exists.  However,
I cannot find /dev/plip0.  When I run "/sbin/insmod plip.o",
it comes back with "_kernel_version undefined".  How do I make
use of the plip driver ?  Do I need to run insmod ?  Can I use plip
in minicom replacing the serial port ?

Thanks for your reply,
Wayne

There is no /dev/plip0... Check /proc/net/devices, thats's where you'll see if
it exists.

If you configured it in your kernel, then you don't need to insmod anything.
And if you get a message at boot time about plip, it's because you configured
it in your kernel.

As for getting it to work, well did you read the NET-w HOWTO?

From what I understand, you just do
ifconfig plip0 <your-addr> pointopoint <remote-addr> up
or something like that, then just add a route to the remote machine with
route add <remote-addr>
or something like that... and that's it.

I didn't try it myself yet though... That's only from the docs...

I was hoping to use plip with a Microcom parallel port modem.
Looked like it is not going to work.  The logical way is to
have a parallel modem driver that emulates a serial device
and interface to slip or ppp.  I think some one is going
to work on this software sooner or later :)
