The driver has been a part of the standard kernel for the longest time.
Either build the wd80x3 support into the kernel or edit /etc/conf.modules
and set eth0 to the wd.o driver module.
You only need software from SMC's ftp site if you want to configure the
IRQ i/o and memory settings stored in the cards EEPROM. Some linux
distributions ship with "wdsetup" that does the same job, but it does not
seem to work 100% reliably with all wd80x3 cards (or so I've found).
