Setting up a home LAN - Linux 5.1 & Win 98 - some pointers needed

Post by Chris Schoenfel » Tue, 06 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Hi,

I want to connect my Win98 and Red Hat Linux 5.1 boxes at home via
TCP/IP.
Any pointers to docs for doing this on either OS, and pointers for
setting up a NE2000 -comp NIC card under Linux, would be appreciated.

I am basically concerned with what I would use for IP addresses so that
they will not conflict with my dial-up networking under 98.

Chris

For IP's that don't conflict, use 192.168.XXX.YYY.  They're set aside for
purposes just like yours.

In RFC1918, there are local network addresses listed.  The class C are
192.168.x.x and the class A are 10.x.x.x.  I've forgotten what the
class B range is.  These addresses are not supposed to be passed onto
the internet.
