Strange ppp freezeup during transfers to NT-PAP server ( redhat6.2 client)

Post by mas.. » Fri, 16 Jun 2000 04:00:00

I have a new Athlon system (600mhz on biostar MB.)  I have set up ppp to
connect to my ISP (solaris dialup server of some sort) and to my work
(NT PAP RAS).  The ISP connection is fine.  The NT PAP connection seems
to lose it's mind frequently.  Things work for a while, then it just
freezes up.  I still have the connection according to the ppp.log and
according to ifconfig.  I checked the route and it is still in place.  I
can't ping the gateway or anything else.  If I kill ppp and re-connect,
things work fine for a while and then will freeze again.

Could it be a problem with compression?

NOTE:  This DOES NOT happen on a Toshiba laptop running RedHat 6.0 and
using the exact same external modem!!

See excerpt from ppp.log:

Serial connection established.

The PPP link negotiation log showed no problems.  Try checking pppd and
modem flow-control settings, the crtscts option for pppd and RTS/CTS
(hardware) for the modem, perhaps set by a modem initialization string
somewhere in the chat arguments or in a chat script.  The AT command in
the old Hayes command set was &K3 but YMMV these days.

The only compression negotiated was VJ header compression and the
negotiations didn't suggest a problem.  You can turn it off with the
pppd novj option, but that's not likely the problem.

Curious.  I'd certainly carefully check the device file settings for
the modem's serial port, although that seems to be ruled out by the
good ISP connection.

1. PPP/CHAP/PAP to an NT server from non-MS client (HELP!)

Please reply directly, as I don't regularly read this group.

I am trying to help a friend get his FreeBSD box to authenticate to
an NT server that is his ISP.  I've heard that Linux can do this.
The NT server is sending me a CHAP algorithm field that is not in
RFC1334, and it drops me if I send a ConfRej for CHAP (instead of
going to PAP).

Any and all help you can offer would be appreciated.  He'd like to do
this for a conference Nov 1-3.  We've been fighting it for weeks now.

Please reply directly, as I don't regularly read this group.
