How do I stop ifconfig RX|TX from maxing-out on 2147483647 packets?

Hi Folks, does anyone know how to stop ifconfigs reported glass cieling of
RX | TX  2147483647 packets?

This happens on a fairly busy machine of mine that appears to have its RX |
TX counter 'stuck' (according to ifconfig) once this has reached 2147483647
packets.

Here is net-tools version data from the offending machine:

net-tools-1.55-1mdk

net-tools 1.55
netstat 1.38 (1999-04-20)
Fred Baumgarten, Alan Cox, Bernd Eckenfels, Phil Blundell, Tuan Hoang and
others
+NEW_ADDRT +RTF_IRTT +RTF_REJECT +FW_MASQUERADE +I18N
AF: (inet) +UNIX +INET +INET6 +IPX +AX25 +NETROM +ATALK +ECONET +ROSE
HW:  +ETHER +ARC +SLIP +PPP +TUNNEL +TR +AX25 +NETROM +FR +ROSE +ASH +SIT
+FDDI +HIPPI +HDLC/LAPB

Has anyone seen this problem before?

net.  It's just that after one day I have .5 Million RX packet errors.

here is the result of an ifconfig.  Any suggestions or queries for
more input?
