Network linux and win95 to ISP thru 1 modem

Network linux and win95 to ISP thru 1 modem

Post by dude » Thu, 05 Feb 1998 04:00:00

How do I setup my network with my
win95 machine?  I would like to
share files and printers.  I have
 ethernet cards in both computers.
I would like to have my linux machine
call the ISP, have the ISP assign
a "dynamic" IP address thru PPP modem hookup.
I have a standard modem.  In theory,
my wife should be able to surf on the
win95 machine at the same time as I
surf the web on the linux box.

The linux machine will have 2 IP addresses,
one "dynamic" IP address from the ISP and
one "static" IP address that will
talk to the win95 machine.  The static IP
on win95 and linux should have the same
first 3 numbers in the IP address, but
different in the 4th number in the IP address.

What files
should I modify and to give an IP
address to the linux and windows95 machine?

How do I set up a dynamic IP in linux?

This is my home network, so what IP address
should I use since I don't have one assigned
 by a network administrator.

I'm looking for a step by step answer.

Thanks in advance,
Julian Fields

IP-Masquerading/IP-Forwarding . The modem will have to reside on
the Linux box. See relevant HOWTOs .

Use IP addresses out of the reserved class-C range, alas
192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 , netmask 255.255.255.0

Remember to specify 'noifdefault' in the ppp's options file, otherwise you
local IP address will be picked up from your /etc/hosts file.

1. ISP/Modem Share w/ FreeBSD & Win95/98 network

I am thinking of moving to a Win95-8 with FreeBSD acting ask a
firewall and protecting my systems. The first problem I see is that
use a free ISP and the addresses on Bluelight/Spinway/Yahoo are always
changing. This has made many problems without the FreeBSD as far as
sharing the modem. I would like to setup a P90 with a 1 GB HD, Win95
and FreeBSD as the Inet server on the LAN and have the other systems
call through it.

System setup as of now:

Main System:            Computer #2                Computer #3
Computer #4 (Soon)
        366 MHz                133 MHz                        P90
Laptop
        Win98se                 Win98se                         PCI
Modem                (more details to come on this)
        15 GB HD              3 GB HD                       3COM E III
NIC
4 GB HD                CD ROM                       1 GB HD
        CD-R                     3COM E III NIC           Win95
        CD
    --- FreeBSD ---
        3COM E III NIC
All of these are running on a 4 port Netgear HUB (going to an 8 port
in a week or so<G>)

I will need a LOT of help with this since I have never worked with a
*nix system so if anyone volunteers to help me setup this firewall and
stop the hackers from seeing my company database and everything,
please have a lot of patience with me. I know my way around the
Windows/DOS systems good and run a small business building them and
selling computers. In helping me I can return the favor with help in
these areas if anyone needs it. Thank you in advanced.
