How full is my ethernet transmit queue?

How full is my ethernet transmit queue?

Post by timeOda » Mon, 08 Sep 2008 13:23:23

I can tell the *capacity* of my transmit queue with ifconfig (txqueuelen).

But how can I tell how many packets are currently queued awaiting
transmission?

As far as I know its just a buffer and gets emptied as soon as it can.
Its done by DMA because of the high speeds.
The chips also have smaller buffers.
If stuff is queued then its likely to be in your application and not
the communications buffers.
But my knowledge is limited - so take with pinch of salt.

1. NFS3 server not responding & ee0: Transmit ring is full

Our 2 cpu DS20E is quite busy running calculations, but is not swapping.
Other workstations and servers is now and then claiming
NFS3 server hox not responding still trying

I can't really seen any reason for this, but on the other hand
I'm not sure exactly what the load and swapping is like under
this circumstances.
In /var/adm/messages there is a lot of these:

Dec  9 15:43:46 hox vmunix: ee0: Transmit ring is full
Dec  9 16:42:04 hox vmunix: ee0:  Receiver Not Ready interrupt

    In-use space:               1 pages (  0%)
    Free space:            393215 pages ( 99%)

Total swap allocation:
    Allocated space:       393216 pages (3.00GB)
    In-use space:               1 pages (  0%)
    Available space:       393215 pages ( 99%)

I have tried to search http://www.tru64unix.compaq.com/ and Google,
but my hits there are not addressing any solution to this.
http://www.blacksheepnetworks.com/security/resources/tru64/0376.html
http://isvpatch.external.hp.com/eds-plm-solutions/patches/text/PHNE_2...

The system is not patched. Mainly because PK3 claimed there were a
problem with the kit and the fortran compiler.
(I thought I'd kept the message but doesn't seem to find it right now)
