can't establish multilink ppp connection

Post by Al Carlso » Sun, 04 Mar 2001 00:48:40

I'm running the 2.4 kernel with pppd version 2.4.0.

I can establish a normal dialup connection using "pppd call isp".  However,
when I try to establish a multilink connection using "pppd call isp
multilink", the protocol negotiation seems to fail.  I can successfully
establish a multilink connection from a Windows box, so I'm sure my ISP
supports multilink.  If anyone can spot a problem in the syslog output I've
included below, I'd appreciate any information that might help me solve or
at least further debug the problem.

Thanks :)

This message tells me that this is *not* a pristine pppd.

Check the web site for updates to the distribution that this pppd came
with, or get the real 2.4.0 pppd source at linuxcare.com.au in pub/ppp
and compile it.  I don't do MP but I rather doubt that the pppd maintainer
would make a mistake in an ioctl call to set the MRRU.

At this point the peer is deaf to IPCP, i.e., the IPCP messages pppd
sends are not received by the peer, or they are scrambled and not
recognized as valid PPP negotiation messages.  Strangely, the peer
does hear and respond to the pppd Echo Requests.

can't establish multilink ppp connection

Post by Al Carlso » Sun, 04 Mar 2001 09:54:47

Thanks for the suggestions, Clifford.  I got a new pppd from
linuxcare.com.au but I had the same problem.  Your insight that the
developer wouldn't have made such a blatant error in the ioctl call made me
think that if it wasn't the pppd, it might be a problem with my kernel.
Sure enough, the standard kernel in the SuSE 7.1 distribution doesn't have
multilink support.  I added it to the configuration (which required that I
enable "experimental" options - I didn't think multilink was that fragile),
recompiled, and the connection worked.

1. Can't establish ppp connection

Could someone help me to get my PPP-connection work. I make this kind
of command:

pppd connect 'chat -v "" ATDT999999 CONNECT "" ogin: mylogin word:
mypassword' /dev/modem 38400 noipdefault debug crtscts modem
defaultroute

Linux calls to my provider and negotiates a few seconds and then
disconnects the call. Debug just says that script failed. I use linux
version 1.3.56 and pppd 2.2.0c. btw, I load (insmod) slhc.o, ppp.o and
bsd_comp.o modules since pppd doesnt work without them. And my PPP
server assigns a different IP address every time I connect. Thanks for
help !!
