Help needed subnetting Class C.

Post by Douglas Furt » Sat, 29 Apr 1995 04:00:00

Hello.. I've got a little problem subnetting a class c..

Ok.. heres what i've got..

Two ethernet segments, with a linux machine in the middle. eth1 and
eth0, each have their own ip addresses, for each side.  We only have
1 class C license, and i've got no idea how to break this apart.

If i had a larger network to deal with, i know how to do it, through
gated and such, but i dont know the proper settings, which i assume
i initate with ifconfig and route, to do this..  Assume I'm a moron,
and please explain with this in mind.

Thanks in advance,

i will not receive mail at this address.

Here's how I would do it:

        Assume a class c network of 200.100.50.0.
Subnet the last octet (0) into nnhhhhhh
where nn is subnetwork and hhhhhh is host.
        Looking at binary values n1=128,n2=64.

Since you shouldn't use 00 or 11 for nn, that
        leaves 10 and 01 which equate to 128 & 64
for subnetworks.  Now we have networks of
        200.100.50.64 and 200.100.50.128. Hosts
can range from 1 to 62.  This gives us a
        valid IP addresses of 200.100.50.65-126
for segment 1 and 200.100.50.129-190 for
        segment 2.

Network mask for either network is
        255.255.255.192.

Hope this helps.

1. Help needed subnetting Class C.

Hello.. I need help subnetting a class C network..

I'm fairly ignorant to a lot of the details of routeing,
and some very comprehensive help would be greatly apprecciate.

I've got a linux machine, with two cards in it, et0 and eth1..
THey work fine, i've got ipx being routed over them..

One segment, on eth0, has a full inet connection, 192.133.12.0
the other, eth1, is connected to an office, and i'd like to get
ip routed to it..

I've been told stuff about gated, and how i should setup the
masks etc.., but am not very sure..

If anyone could please take like 5 minutes, and write me up
clear instructions to what I need in the routeing table,
and under gated, i'd really apprecciate it..

Thanks..

THank you sincerly..
