What is proxy ARP?

Post by Christopher R. Carle » Thu, 13 Jan 2000 04:00:00

My pppd is making the following entries in the log files:

Jan 12 18:08:42 carlen2 pppd[470]: Cannot determine ethernet address for
proxy ARP

What's going on?  I have a dialup connection and no configured ethernet
interfaces.  Kernel 2.2.10 Suse 6.2 using kppp.

So that is why it can't determine the ethernet address.  ;-)

Sugest to tell your pppd not to use proxy ARP.

Proxy ARP is a way to let the remote system conected via ppp apear to
the other systems on the ethernet to be a local conected systems, so
no special routing entry would be required.  Only useful if the remote
system is a single computer with no further network connection, that is,
not if you conect to the internet.

1. mstppp, proxy arp, what am i doing wrong?

OK heres the setup,

sco 5.0.4, networked with about 15 pcs via ethernet, its ip is x.x.x.10
(NIC), mstppp configured with the following command 'pppd x.x.x.17:x.x.x.18
netmask 255.255.255.192 rtscts nopred1 nostac'

win95 machine, using dialup networking

the win95 pc dials up, connects and is allocated the ip address x.x.x.18,
ifconfig says that there is a ppp interface at x.x.x.17 on the sco box, and
there are static routes from x.x.x.17 to x.x.x.18 and from x.x.x.17 to
127.0.0.1.
i can ping from x.x.x.18 to x.x.x.17 and from x.x.x.18 to x.x.x.10 but i
cant ping anything thats on the lan from x.x.x.18. so i try the command
'arp -s x.x.x.18 mac-of-nic-in-server pub' this is displayed in the arp
table but does not fix my problem.
some things that may be relevant are :

the netmask of the server is 255.255.255.192
the server is setup as a dns

thanks.
mick.
