Go into the /etc/modules.conf file and change the setting "alias etho
3c59x" to "alias etho 3c90x".
The 3c905c nic has to use the 3c90x.o driver and 3c905B nic can use the
3c59x.o driver, It seems like everytime linux sets up the 3c905c it uses
the 3c59x.o driver and that won't work properly with 3c905c.
If you would goto /lib/modules/2.2.14-5/net  you will see the driver
modules there.

3Com network card cannot see network

Post by Matthew Darc » Sat, 17 Mar 2001 18:55:34

to clarify

I have a 3-COM 3C905-C-TX 10/100 Mbit PCI NIC PnP Networking card, installed
in a Redhat 6.2 machine using 2.2.14-5 kernel.

the network card is detected at install and at boot up time, ifconfig shows
eth0 as up and as correct card. The led's are on at both the card and the
switch it is plugged into.

/var/adm/messages shows the line...
3c58x.c:v099H 11/17/98 Donald beckker
http://cesduas.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/vortex.html

then
eth0 3Com 3c905C Tornado at 0xe400, ###invalid checksum 002f ###
00:04:76:15:2d:ae IRQ11

I am guessing this is an invalid IRQ.

How can I fix this ?

My sound card (soundblaster) hangs on sndconfig and sometimes does a kernel
panic. I wonder if this is related.

I appriciate your time and hope this is enough details.

Many thanks,

Matthew

1. Networking 3COM card - cant get to recognize network

I am using a dual boot machine at work on a lan with 95/linux , 95 works
fine. I recompiled the kernal to support my 3Com Etherlink 900 XL card
using the latest Vortex driver (3c59x). But it cant see my network at all.
Here is the messages file.

How does linux actually let me select an IRQ or IO address? I ran make
xconfig many times trying various options.

Thanks
