Linux/Solaris NIS/NIS+

Has anyone successfully setup Linux NIS clients to work with Solaris
NIS+ servers?  The only thing I have been able to figure out is that you
must run the server in NIS-compatibility mode.  Please email me any
responses.

No, there is a real NIS+ client for Linux. After had been testing it at home
for several weeks we installed it at our institute for about 50 Users and
are very happy with it. Primary developed for GNU libc there is an
implementation for libc-5.4.38 that we are using. There is no implementation
for old a.out libc-4, so be carefully in case you are running a self grown
system for long time.

The libnsl-package for libc5 includes a patch against libc-5.4.33/.35/.38
which drops everything off the libc that is implemented in the new libnsl.
Also it includes automatic linking to the libnsl for all binaries that are
not explicitly linked against it at build-time.
So if you have a dynamically linked /bin/login and /usr/X11R6/bin/xdm /and
maybe ssh(d)), you shouldn't expect any problems.

Remember to create a correct /etc/nsswitch.conf, get a nis-tools package and
compile at least the 'nisinit' command. Then you just run
'nisinit -c -H <NIS+-Server>' and be happy. I myself am running NIS+ client
for libc5 _and_ Glibc on one system with glibc-2.0.90. This release of glibc
already has NBIS+-stuff included.

You'll find everything you need on:
