This question entirely depends on what you want to do with NIS.  If you want
to be a NIS client, all you have to do is edit /etc/nsswitch.conf and add a line
of the format:

<filename>:    <source1> [source2] [source3]...

IE to use /etc/passwd, nis 3.0 and nis 2.0 (in that order) to look up passwords,
use the line
passwd:        files nisplus nis

Also, don't forget to set your nis domain name using the domainname command.

The NIS howto and the NAG may help, but I've found they often have contradictory
information, largely because of the different implementations and locations of
implementations of nis libraries.

Hope that helps.

The information in the NAG are to old, that is the problem. The NIS-HOWTO
is newer and more uptodate. The NAG is 2 years old, and the NIS code
had changed a lot since this time.

Linux is like a Vorlon.  It is incredibly powerful, gives terse,
cryptic answers and has a lot of things going on in the background.

1. Solaris 2.3 install, NIS, NIS+, or none?

We are installing Solaris 2.3 on a machine that had been running 4.1.3.
We want to run DNS, but the installation only asks if we want NIS, NIS+
client or None.  To use DNS, should we select one option over the others?
or are all equally usable for configuring DNS?
