MediaOne Cable Modem

Post by Man in the Moo » Mon, 06 Dec 1999 04:00:00

I just got a MediaOne Cable Modem and it works fine in Windows, however, it
doesn't work in Corel Linux. First of all, how do I setup the cable to work
in Corel, and second how can I get two computer to share this one line if
the other one is Windows 95 only?

u must be using the network card that was originally connected to mediaone
when they did the installation, they DO check the mac address on the network
card..  then just set-up your card to get it's info from dhcp, and get the
name server addresses from winipconfig in windows and put those in your DNS
server in linux..  then should work fine (I had mine working in just a few
minutes on mediaone, didn't have any problems). then if you put a second
network card in your linux box, set-up masqerading (read the IPCHAINS howto
for details, the NET-3 howto will be helpfull too) and  network your windows
machine to your linux box on the second card..  and you should be all set...

Or you can make your ifcfg-eth# look like this:
DEVICE=eth#
ONBOOT=yes
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
MACADDR=00:43:05:35:CC:A2

If you had mediaone set up your windows machine, and you want to set up ip masq
with a different box, grab your MAC address from your windows machine with
winipcfg or ipconfig /all. Then the card in your linux box appears to mediaone
that it's the one they originally configured. That's what I did :-)

1. mediaone cable modem

let me just say first that i have read the cable modem mini-howto. i
also checked deja news to see if an answer was posted for this question
and have found none.  the mediaone setup i have consists of a cable
modem and a regular analog modem. the analog modem is used to send
upstream info while the cable modem is used for downstream info. any
ideas on how to configure this under linux... using redhat 5.1.  the
cable modem mini howto only seems to address the two-way systems and not
the hybrid
