Win95<->Linux via null modem

Win95<->Linux via null modem

Does anybody know how to do this, if it's possible...

I have two computers, both 486s. One with MS-DOS/Windows 3.11 (without the
networking files, they're long gone:() on one partition and Linux on the other
partition. The other computer runs Windows 95. I don't have any network cards
nor modems. All I have is a null modem cable. What I want to do is write a java
telnet client (I know it's been done before, but I want to do one myself) and
naturally test it out, but I need a server to connect to whilst testing - the
Linux server, and I'll have to write it on the Windows 95 PC (using JDK). I
need to connect the two PCs together so that when I run the applet in a web
browser in Windows 95 I can test it out at connecting to a host, which is the
other computer, without putting special codes into the java client (so that I
can use it on the proper internet web).

Can this be done? If so, how?

I am thinking maybe I have to write the java client on the Linux box and test
it on it's own server, but as far as I can see JDK isn't available for Linux :/

Thanks in advance. And please if you can, send any constructive advice to my
e-mail as well as the newsgroup.

JDK is indeed available for Linux at:

ftp.ce.usu.edu
/pub/mirror/linux/JDK/JDK-1.1.3

1. Linux <->Null Modem<->Win95 with PPP

I have been tring to get my pppd in my Linux box setup so that I can
do some serial networking via a null modem cable...  I have tried a
couple of different methods of doing this...

I get the most response out of my machine using the same setup that
was illistrated in the network admin guide (setting up a ppp account
and a pppd script).

If anyone has done this, drop me a line... I could use some new ideas,
new approaches and some help with all these damn messages in the log
files <grin>..
