ftpd[21568]: open of pid file failed: No such file or dir

Post by Denn » Tue, 16 Jun 1998 04:00:00

HEllo,

I have about 5000 of these entries in my syslog file.

ftpd[21568]: open of pid file failed: No such file or directory

Does anyone know where this pid file should be and how I can fix it.

Thanks
Dennis

This sounds like a directory permissions problem.  Try looking at the
permissions of the /var/tmp directory.  They should be

drwxrwxrwx   3 root     root         3072 Jun 15 10:59 /var/tmp/

and if they are not do chmod 777 /var/tmp.  Another candidate directory
to check the permissions on is /tmp.

1. ftpd - open of pid file failed

Ever since I added the shadow password suite to my linux box and compiled the
new fixed version of wu-ftpd, I've been continuously getting the following
message in my syslog:

Jun 10 14:29:09 schroeder ftpd[17138]: open of pid file failed: No such file
or directory

What is causing this? I suppose that there should be a ftpd.pid file
somewhere; is the location in a conf file? I have searched the filesystems for
a pid file associated with ftpd, and it could not be found. Please enlighten
me . .

TIA

Sean
