Linux as an ethernet bridge/switch

Has anyone yet attempted or successfully made Linux into an ethernet
bridge/switch device?  Are the ethernet device drivers organized so
that a loadable module could take over two or more ethernet interfaces
and start doing the bridge/switch thing?  Can the drivers provide all
ethernet frame and datagram types?

These questions are just preliminary to see if it is feasible to dig
into the kernel to see how it's actually done.

I've tried, but was, however, unsuccessful.  I would love it if somebody
would provide some documentation on this procedure...
