Linux - WinME...

Post by D Borlan » Fri, 29 Sep 2000 04:00:00

I am currently trying to connect my Mandrake7.0 PC, to by WindowsME machine,
and am desprately needing some clean english help.... (in other words jargon
free)

I am a complete linux newbie, and am trying to learn this, but, i am finding
most manuals totaly confusing, and also the sheer amount of articles,
HOWTO's there, conflicting each other, and duplicates, ect... (is there
anyhwere, where you can get decent help... ?)

So is there anyone here, that knows of a complete decent document, that will
explain how i can do this, without having to be a complete 'linux guru'... ?
Or can anyone even help me... ?

My problems are simple (i hope), but like i said, i am a complete linux
newbie...

I need to know if my ethernet, is installed right... mandrake7.0 said it
found and configured it, but how do i check... ?

How do i set my ethernet card up, to be network ready... ?

Is there anything else that am going to need to know... ?

I understand that i need Samba to make the connection to the windows, box,
and i have a manual from a linux magazine, that seems easy enough to do...
(  i hope : / )

Thanks for your time... Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have had some people say to me, "read the HOWTO's", and if they would
please read themseves, then they would see that i already said that i had,
and that they are far beyond confusing, for a linux newbie, with zero
networking knowledge... !

I had been advised to set-up the network through linuxconf, which i have
attempted to do, but no such luck, i had a perfectly working stand alone
linux box, and hey, guess what it's wreacked now, things failing everywhere,
http....failed / bringing up eth0, delaying eth0...failed.... on hutting
down these fail aswell as smb and nmb... !

I have set my network as so...

name + domain..... LOKI.ODESSEY (made this up, does it need to be something
specific... ?)

IP.... 194.168.0.2 ( ...0.1 is my WINme box)

ifconfig..... no driver there, should be tulip
lsmod....... only lo, not eth0.

HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yours

Try a specific group such as alt.os.linux.mandrake

But IMHO, if you have the means, get rid of ME and return to 98/SE

The following articles by Gene Wilburn are good plain english guides on
Linux for newbies, specifically articles 12-14 deal with networking:

Start with this.

1. Linux-WinME Dual-boot

I'm wonder about running a dual-boot system with WinME and Linux.  I'm
running a single partition with WinME currently.  I've heard that problems
with the system arise (when running a dual-boot computer) and the need to
format is not so seldom.  What version of Linux is best for this (I have not
used Linux before, but have fairly good general computer experience), is it
possible to keep the current partition fully intact and how much disk space
may the new partition take, with a few apps on?
