pppd freezes/dies with Interrupted system call

I am using two linux servers running pppd over a leased line connecting two
networks but unfortuantly pppd at the server end stops exchaning packets

following messages
pppd[623]: Using interface ppp0
pppd[623]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS1
pppd[623]: local  IP address 233.129.263.5
pppd[623]: remote IP address 233.129.263.6
pppd[623]: Compression enabled
pppd[623]: Hangup (SIGHUP)
pppd[623]: Modem hangup
pppd[623]: Connection terminated.
pppd[623]: Failed to open /dev/ttyS1: Interrupted system
call
pppd[623]: Exit.
pppd[631]: pppd 2.2.0 started by root, uid 0

The system is running on LRP Kernel 2.0.36 with ppp  version 2.2/ ppp
support as modular & bsd compression

The below Problem solves with upgrading to pppd 2.3.5 or more
