Has anyone modified the sftp from openssh yet so that it has at least some
sort of a basic progress indicator? My bet is that lots more people would
use sftp as opposed to plain of ftp, if only it was a bit more user
friendly :)

I've considered hacking it myself, but I don't want to do that if it's
already been done.

FYI, I use scp commands instead of sftp, and it includes a progress metter.
