Networking module loading question

Networking module loading question

Post by Pankaj Chhabr » Tue, 06 Nov 2001 16:51:15

Hi,

When I load a networking module in the new kernels, open routine of the
driver automatically gets called.
Basically I do
#insmod ./3c59x.o

Open routine of the driver gets called even though I have not opened the
interface with
#ifconfig eth0 up

Is there a way to stop automatic opening of the interface? Is kernel doing
it or some user level configuration
controls it?.

It depends on your distribution which you didn't provide, but under Linux and
Mandrake you can edit a file with a name similar to:
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and change a line at the bottom of
the file to read:
ONBOOT=no

This will stop the network interface being brought up automatically when the
system is booted or the network sub-system restarted.

See ya
