slow network response from telnet, ftp, http

Post by Sherman Kw » Tue, 04 Jun 1996 04:00:00

I'm running Slackware 1.2.13 on an internal server and the response time for
telnet, ftp, http, etc. are all VERY slow.  For telnet and ftp it takes 30-60
seconds before it asks me for the password.  Once connected, the speed is
quite reasonable.  For serving up Web pages, the initial contact takes a few
seconds before the pages start getting served across the network.

Anyone else had this problem or have any ideas what might be causing this?

thanks,
sherman

Anytime you have a connection delay that is a multiple of 30 seconds, your
likely problem is with the nameserver configuration.

This connection delay can be caused by a problem at either end, because
the destination machine usually looks up the name of the source machine
for logging and authentication purposes.

If the delay is in the initial connection, the likely problem is on the
source end.
If the connection is made immediately but the prompt takes 60 seconds,
the likely problem is at the destination.

1. Slow Telnet response, fast rlogin response

I am running solaris 2.5 on a Sparc20, and I am using DNS for name service.
When I Telnet to the machine from a remote site, I get very poor response.  It
works for about 1 minute, then hangs for ~1 minute.  If I Telnet to another
machine on our local ethernet, and rlogin to the Solaris 2.5 machine, the
response is fine.  This leads me to believe that it is not a problem with the
connection into my site.  Is there something I need to adjust.

Thanks,
