Win98 PPTP client can't connect through ipmasq, works w/ modem

Post by Steve Jorgense » Tue, 13 Apr 1999 04:00:00

I'm setting up a Linux firewall with demand dialing and ipmasq.  I can
access the Internet through the firewall, but I can't connect to a PPTP
server.  If I try the same PPTP connection from the same computer over a
direct dial-up to the isp, it works fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks, that looks like what I need.  Of course, I have been able to avoid
recompiling the kernel until now, oh well.

Since the default Slackware 2.0.36 Kernel has worked for everything else
I've done, is there any way to know what settings were used so I can make
only the minimum required changes to the settings before recompiling?

Don't know. Don't use RedHat. Like Debian better.

Debian was the first one I tried, and I might go back to it later when I'm
more experienced.  With Debian, it's too hard for a beginner to know what to
install, and the distribution is huge.  I agree about Red Hat, I got way
farther way faster with Slackware.

Before you change your kernel, run "make menuconfig" or "make xconfig"
(whichever you prefer) and use the "save configuration" option to save your
current configuration in a file. You can then later read in this
configuration, make small changes, save it again...

It saves you starting from scratch every time.

Cool, but will the current configuration match the default kernel (I
selected the option to use the kernel from the boot disk) after installing
Slackware?  It won't do any good to save the current configuration unless it
matches the current kernel, eh?

Thanks for all the help you guys are giving me.  I know I've drifed off
topic.

1. VPN from Win98 Client thru IPCHAINS+IPMASQ firewall

Hi All,

More just curious than anything as I can get around this another way but
what specific ports is any do I need to open (and how, ie, IPCHAINS syntax)
to allow my Win98SE clients using MS-VPN access to the internet and the VPN
server?

I am running a PPP dial-on-demand Linux RH 6.2 firewall/router/gateway etc.
If you need more info just ask :-)

BTW,  just to clarify, I am NOT trying to run VPN on the firewall, just
client to internet VPN through my firewall.  My firewall blockes nearly
everything comming in from the net.

Thanks in advance.

James
