Talk & Talk-Server won't play ball

Post by Paul » Tue, 24 Apr 2001 05:46:16

Hi,

I'm fairly new to linux and to networking and I've put myself through a
crash course in setting up a small network with two Mandrake machine and 2
Ethernet cards.

Nearly everthing has worked so far.  Telnet, Ftp, IPMasqing (connection
sharing) apache intranet server etc. etc.  I just can't get talk to work.

I've read the how-tos, at least as far as the bit when it starts talking
about using talk to talk over the network and mine just won't.  I either
get, your party is not logged in or connection refused.

Both machines have xinetd, talk & talk server installed.

Any help or advice appreicated..

Check to make sure that the "talk" server is actually enabled in your
/etc/xinetd.d/talk-server (or similar) file.  It may be there but have a
"disable=yes" flag in it, which means that it isn't starting.  Additionally,
you might also want to check to make sure that the hostname and domainname
actually resolve correctly as well.  I know that the talk system can be a bit
sensitive about machine names being able to resolve into IP addresses.

Also check to make sure that you are not running a firewall which might be
blocking the ports that the talk daemon uses (517/518 with the UDP protocol).

See ya

Make sure the terminals that are being used are allowed to accept
messages. To turn messages on do this:

mesg y

by default root has this turned off.

1. Slackware 1.1.2 talk(1) won't talk to Suns (explain talkd)

With Slackware 1.1.2, this seems to not work.  I cannot remember
if it used to work.

Apparently, talk for BSD 4.2/3 are not compatible.  I don't know
which the Suns have.

I get an error about some refused connection from daemon (111).
What's with the ntalkd and talkd?  They are links.  Does the file
behave differently when invoked differently?

Thanks.
