Check to make sure that the "talk" server is actually enabled in your
/etc/xinetd.d/talk-server (or similar) file. It may be there but have a
"disable=yes" flag in it, which means that it isn't starting. Additionally,
you might also want to check to make sure that the hostname and domainname
actually resolve correctly as well. I know that the talk system can be a bit
sensitive about machine names being able to resolve into IP addresses.
Also check to make sure that you are not running a firewall which might be
blocking the ports that the talk daemon uses (517/518 with the UDP protocol).
