No DHCPACK when installing RedHat Linux 8.0 (tulip driver)

Hi all,

I have a RedHat Linux 7.3 server running dhcp-3.0pl1-9 as DHCP server. I
have numerous clients (both Windows 98 SE and RedHat Linux 7.3) working
well with it.

However I'm trying to install RedHat Linux 8.0 on one of the clients through
FTP. Unfortunately, the NIC (an Accton EN-1216) don't seem to work with the
tulip driver on the RedHat Linux 8.0 bootnet floppy.

What is very strange is that :

1) The same NIC works wonderfully well with RedHat Linux 7.3 (with the
supplied tulip driver)

2) From my server log, I see these:

dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from 00:30:f1:4f:c9:85 via eth0
        DHCPOFFER on 192.168.1.53 to 00:30:f1:4f:c9:85 via eth0
and then nothing else (no DHCPACK !)

implying that the NIC is somewhat working but isn't acknowledging the
offer...

I believe that the tulip driver on the bootnet floppy is buggy. Can I
replace it with the old (RedHat Linux 7.3) ? How ?

Any other ideas ?

Thanks

Avinash Meetoo

linux onboard LAN ethernet NIC errors working problem solution solved

Hi,

For RH 8.0, to install lan driver, after doing 'make' I was getting
lot of errors, because I had not installed kernel developement
packages needed to build the driver.

Use the Red Hat RPM Package Management tool to install the Kernel
Development package:
- kernel-source
- libacl-devel
- libattr-devel

then follow the procedure in release.txt for the linux driver on Asus
P4PE CD.
Should work fine. Then configure the device in by any way you like.

Make sure that gcc is already installed.

I found the solution here :
