connecting Windows and Linux thru serial cable

Hi, I think this is probably a stupid idea to make such a network with a
serial cable since the price for network cards have become so low. Yet I
still want to do it just for the sake of interest.

The main goal of what I want to do is to share harddrives between Windows
and Linux. I think I should use Samba for mapping the Linux harddrive to
Windows. But since I am now using a serial cable instead of an ethernet
card, I am not sure if this can be accomplished. Can anyone tell me if this
is possible? I have configured sliplogin on my Linux box and trying to use
the hyperterminal from Windows to log into the Linux box. After I log in, I
see the message telling me the two addresses that I assigned, then I
cannot type in anything anymore. And when I go back to my linux box and run
ps, I see that sliplogin is running at S0. Then I tried to ping the windows
box and what I see on the hyperterminal is some weird characters. I think I
am able to ping the windows box but I cannot get Windows to respond to the
ping. Can anyone tell me what I shoud do now? Am I on the right track?

You'd need to get PPP working between these machines, then set up and
configure Samba.

Of course, at somewhere around 1 MB per minute (running at 115,200
baud null modem), filesharing is going to perform...poorly.  :-)

I know that you are an optimist if you think I am a pessimist....

1. Linux to connect to Windows via Serial Cable

We have two pc's at home, mine & my dads. I have
got my computer to connect to my dads (via serial
cable) by setting up null modems (using .inf from
the internet), running dial up server in win98 on
my dads, and using the null modem and dial up
networking on my computer (win98). this allows me
to access printers, files etc on my dads
computer, and also the internet through a proxy
program (spoon proxy) transparent to my computer.

My question is, I have installed redhat 6 on my
machine and want to set a similar thing up so I
can access the internet via my dads computer
(running win98) via the serial cable from linux.

I have tried telling linux there is a modem on
tty2 (com2) (using the red hat dialler) but when
it comes to dial it issues the ATZ command and
the other computer/cable? of course returns
gibberish.

Is there a way of making the linux box connect to
the internet via the win98 machine and serial
cable or do I have to buy a new modem (I only
have a winmodem which I got for a fiver) or
ethernet cards?
