Newbie - DNS networking

Post by Fish » Thu, 26 Apr 2001 17:54:01

i need a little hand holding, i am trying to set up an internal
network which access the internet via my smoothwall box
(smoothwall.org). the internal network will have NT4, win98 and linux
on it running web servers, ftp and work stations. the web server will
be set up to mimic my ISP web server setup, so name based and IP based
web sites will need to be set up.

The servers and a couple of workstations will be static IP the rest
will use dchp.

Do have to setup a system user account for each IP based server? how
do all the dir (www, usr, conf, home etc) get created?

Can anyone give me an outline of what i need to do and where to get an
easy to follow howto on doing this.

many thanks

I am not exactally sure what you are trying to do here.  Are you setting up
many virtual web servers on one web server ?

Additionally, I can't see what this has to do with DNS networking as DNS
stands for Domain Name Server.

See ya

1. Newbie DNS/Network Help

Hi.  I am running Sygate 3.1 on an unstable Win98 machine.  It uses dhcp for
wins resolution on one nic, and 129.0.0.4 for the other.  My Suse 6.3 Linux
machine has the gateway and dns server set to 129.0.0.4.  I can ping ip that
are on the internet, but just not names (lycos.com).  Sygate doesn't know a
dns server, so it sets it to 0.0.0.0.  My other Win98 machines use names
like lycos.com just fine.  I am really stuck, and any help whatsoever would
be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

PS: I haven't hooked up the cable modem to the Linux machine because I have
heard that it isn't easy to set up Linux to use dhcp.  Is this true?
