User names limitations/problems

Post by Vincenzo Roma » Thu, 30 Nov 1995 04:00:00

Hi all!
I'd like to know if there are some official limitation on the choice
of the characters for the user names.
I'm encountering some strange problems with names longer than 8 chars
and with ones with a dot inside it.
These problems arise, in particular, with the ftp and talk clients.
And disappear as soon as I cut  and clean the user names.
Any help will be highly apreciated, especially if sent by e-mail.
Thanks in advance

I've been asked to be more precise about these problems.
If I try to talk to the user "j.doe" I get:
        talk: j: Unknown server error
I cannot login correctly if my username is longer than 8 chars if I use
either "login" or "telnet".
Everything works fine when using the agetty client.
The ftp error was dued to an incorrect specification of the login shell in
the file /etc/shells. I fixed it, even if I don't understand the problem! :-(
Many thanks again for any kind of help!
