pppd newbie question: net-pf-4??

Post by Edsko de Vrie » Fri, 08 May 1998 04:00:00

Hi,

I just installed Linux Slakware 2.0.0 and tried to make a connection to
Internet. I used minicom to dial into the PPP server and started pppd.
pppd gave this error msg: "module net-pf-4 missing" and "module net-pf-5
missing" (and some other error msgs as well). This msgs also appear when
Linux boots. Are these modules vital for pppd, and is so, where do I get
them?

pppd newbie question: net-pf-4??

Post by Ken » Sun, 10 May 1998 04:00:00

From a previous post by someone else:
---------------------
This is a weird little quirk from the earlier days of Linux.  Just
put the following in /etc/conf.modules to get rid of error messages:

alias net-pf-4 off
alias net-pf-5 off

Methinks they ommitted this from the RedHat 5.0 installation manual,
whereas it was in the 4.0 manual.  Go figure
----------------
Hope this helps.

1. pppd says can't locate modules net-pf-4 and net-pf-5

I'm pretty much new to setting up Linux so bear with me.  I've just
recompiled the 2.0.32 kernel and everything works, so I decide to setup
PPP, after reading through the multiple HOW-TO's, I think everything is
setup correctly.  When I try to run my pppd script to connect to my isp,
/var/log/messages reports (also on bootup) that modprobe: can't locate
module net-pf-4 and net-pf-5.  I'm not sure if that's related to the fact
that I can't establish a PPP connection.  The modem (ISDN, Motorola
Bitsurfer Pro) dials and connects, but sits there and then disconnects.
My ISP is using PAP.  Unfortunately for the time being, I've had to resort
to using Win95 with Wingate.

my options file has the following:
lock
debug
kdebug 1
defaultroute
/dev/modem
115200
modem
connect
'chat -f /etc/ppp/chat.scr'
asyncmap 0
mru 552
mtu 552
lcp-echo-interval 60
lcp-echo-failure 2
lcp-max-configure 30
+ua /etc/ppp/pap-secrets
name <my username>

chat.scr has:
ABORT BUSY ABORT 'NO CARRIER' ''
atdt<isp phone#>&2 ''
'' ogin:--ogin: <my username>
word: <my password>
'' ''

Thanks for any help possible.
