Is it possible to start a windowmanager (such as kdm or fvwm2) on
MIXServer 5.6?
Thanks in advance,

I ended up with superX and WinX32 both are Win95 Xservers and allow you to
use the Windows window manager.
WinX32 gives you two hours then warns you and shuts down. SuperX is a sixty
day trial (then you have to reinstall).

I use Xwin32 http://www.starnet.com (which I suppose is similar) running
under win95 and NT and it works quite happily using xdm or kdm.

: Hi
: I couldn't get it to work :-(
You can only run *one* window manager at a time.

As these are already running a window manager you can't run another one.
i.e. you probably can't run a remote window manager with a MS windows, OS/2,
etc X-Server. You can with a proper X-Terminal. (Or if you can find
something which will actually work as one, i.e. if will give you a grey
hatched screen with an 'X' shaped cursor when you start it up.)

xdm (and kdm) are not window managers. Also they are not usually run
with a window manager active, even though they could be.

In the case of MIXserver, this is not true. MIX puts the X desktop in aQuote:> i.e. you probably can't run a remote window manager with a MS windows,

I prefer fvwm. Here's the script I run on my Linux box after logging in via
telnet. MIX is running on the box I logged in from.
cd
server=`ps f | perl -ne 'print $1 if /login -h ([-_A-Za-z0-9]+)/;'`
export DISPLAY=$server:0.0
exec ~/.Xclients &
( sleep 30; rm core ) &
It figures out which system I logged in from, sets $DISPLAY appropriately,
and runs my .Xclients script (which starts fvwm and a few clients.) This
give me the same desktop I see when I run startx on the Linux console.
Deleting the core file is handy because MIX does not implement some shape
extensions, so some of the clients in my .Xclients file bomb out (for
instance, xclock).

I have yet to see anything this fancy in freeware, so if you want a fully
functional, fully X11R6 compliant X server for Windows, you may have to shell
out some bucks. Personally, I'm very satisfied with the purchase.

Check out MicroImages Free TNT Lite X Server
www.microimages.com
It supports a lot of the XWindows protocol - enough
for their application - so they give it away for free.
It doesn't have a font server, so you must manually transfer
any fonts you need from the Linux box, but that said, it
is free, and it works !

1. Running KDE (or Gnome) on remote x-server
I have set up my Red Hat 7.2 system on one computer successfully and can run
KDE or Gnome on the local display.
I now want to do the same from a remote Windows computer. I've set up an
X-Server (XSecurePro 7.1) and can get an xterm window to display and even
start twm or mwm, but I don't know how to start the KDE or Gnome
environment.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
