Sharing Internet connection via a Linux box.

Sharing Internet connection via a Linux box.

Post by <haluktun.. » Wed, 01 Mar 2000 04:00:00

Dear Linux gurus,

I have a Linux machine connected to a LAN (The other comps connected to the
LAN are Windows boxes). My distribution is  Suse Linux 6.3. I set up a PPP
Internet connection and it is working perfectly well. Also my connection
with LAN has no problems. But I want the Windows boxes to reach Internet
through my Linux boxes' PPP connection. I set the default gateway and DNS
addresses on the Windows machines. I need a way for instructing my Linux
box to forward the outgoing packets to the PPP host and also forward the
incoming packets to windows hosts on the LAN.

Thanks in advance.

Haluk

Check out the IP Masquerade HOWTO.

Sharing Internet connection via a Linux box.

If you need to get your linux box to route data you'll need to use ipfwd or
ipchains.  one of the two should be on your system.  Type whereis ipchians
to see if you have it.  if you do a very simple route to enter is:

    ipchains -A forward -i ppp0 -j MASQ

That basically tells the linux box to forward all traffic into your linux
box out ppp0 using IP Masquerading.  there are more options and commands
that go with ipchains so you can fine tune exactly who or what goes where in
what way.  But the above should work initially.

1. connect a linux machine to the internet via internet connection sharing

Hi,

Basically, tell your Linux box the IP address of a DNS server, and that it
should use the IP address of the Windows machine as its gateway.  What about
showing us the output of your /sbin/ifconfig and /sbin/route -n commands on
your Linux box.

See ya
