Are there any drivers which will support the 3Com 3C9xx chipset ethernet
as built into the motherboard of Dell GX series PC's ?

Yes, use the Vortex driver:

IMPORTANT: If you have a "3c916" on the motherboard, it's likely miswired.
Turn off the media autosensing using the 3Com setup program before
attempting to use the driver.

The chip is supposed to be wired with some pins indicating a which
transceivers are available.  At least one on-motherboard implementation did
not do this, and the driver will loop for a connected transceiver.
A work-around is implemented in the test version:
