I am running the kppp that comes packaged in rh 7.1 and every time I connect
to the internet, I can't run any other programs.

What sort of problems do you get?, what sort of error messages do you
receive?, what is the behaviour of the programs that don't work?

Whenever I start a program, using xterm in x after connecting using kppp
(note, I start xterm before connecting,) I get "Xlib: connection refused by
server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server

It sounds like there is a problem with your X system or that the DNS server is
unable to resolve the hostname that you have given yourself to the IP address
on the DNS.  Make sure that you have got a valid IP address which I presume
the PPP connection assigns to you and that you have got a valid nameserver
specified within your /etc/resolv.conf file.
