hi:

suppose I haev two NIC on one machine, how can I tell which NIC is eth0,
which NIC is eth1?

Use linuxconf. There must be some way to do it.
You can set kernel mode, like ne(ne2000clone) with eth0 or eth1.

give the command /sbin/ifconfig eth0 down
then the lite behind the network card should go off ,that way u can mark the
card and go ahead.
I am having an Intel Ether Express Pro LAN Card ,and the above technique
works just fine for me,

The ifconfig command will display the MAC address.  You can then
compare with the MAC address printed on the NIC.

ping 255.255.255.255 -I <local interface adress>

Won't the "link integrity" light still be alive even if you issue a
'/sbin/ifconfig eth0 down' ?
