Q: talk error--[Couldn't bind to control socket : Cannot assign requested address (99)]

I am using Slackware 2.2 with linux kernel 1.2.8 and whenever I try to intiate
a talk session with anyone (even myself), or reply to someones talk request I
get the following error message:

[Couldn't bind to control socket : Cannot assign requested address (99)]

When I try to do the same thing using ytalk I get the following message:

                 ##############################################
                 #                Ytalk Error                 #
                 #                                            #
                 #  No talk daemon on planitia.*com.net   #
                 #         No such file or directory          #
                 ##############################################

I am pretty sure that everything is set up correctly in /etc/services and
/etc/inetd.conf since I have compared them to several working systems and found
nothing to be different. Any help on this error would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Do you have your IP address well configured? If you don't have a connection
to a LAN or the Internet then use lo0 as your primary interface and give
your host 127.0.0.1 as its IP address.

Good luck.

1. TALK cannot assign requested address (99)

Hi all,

I have a problem with TALK: when I'm trying to talk to another user, I always
get the following message:

[Couldn't bind to control socket: cannot assign requested address (99)]

instead of being able to talk. I'm running Slackware 2.0.0 (Linux 1.0.9) withoutnetwork cards (only PPP), but this problem also occurs when trying to talk bet-
ween two virtual consoles.

Who knows about help for this problem?

Thank you very much

Stefan
