NFS doesn't work (hangs almost immidiately)

Post by Jan Bucko » Mon, 16 Apr 2001 01:19:28

Hi,

I set up NFS in my local network (three computers with 100MBit ethernet
cards and one 5 port switch).

Every machine is server and client. At first it seemed to work: I can
mount the exported directories. But usually after very few nfs operations
(listing mounted directories, ...) nfs hangs.

Even though I set the 'intr' option in /etc/fstab I cannot interupt.

Can anybody give me some hint, what to try? Is there some NFS trouble
shooting information somewhere out there?

Thanks,

Jan

This is very wierd behaviour, as people normally have problems getting the
connection established.  You might like to take a look at the NIS-HOWTO
located at http://www.linuxdoc.org.

Check to make sure that all your network cards are configured correctly and
that any duplexing issues are resolved amongst the various machines of the
network.  When your NIS system hangs, does all other network traffic die as
well, or is just localised to the NFS system.

See ya

it's just the NFS. I can ftp, telnet, ssh, slogin, scp, ...without any problems.
Seems to be just the NFS. As installing NFS seems to be a
very straight-forward configuration issue (compile NFS support, start
portmap, rpc, mountd, entries in /etc/fstab and /etc/exports) it seems
strange that of all network services NFS makes the trouble.

Maybe your NFS-server is a kernel version 2.40 and all partitions have
reiserfs? So, the problem is normal ... please export ONLY ext2 partitions
to an other machine!

It is very wierd that it is just the NFS which causes a problem.  Have you
checked the sites to make sure that you have the latest version of the
nfs-server and nfs-client suite of programs ?

See ya

1. Re. bffcreate -X doesn't work Re: bffcreate -X Doesn't Work

bffcreate first restores all images from the tape to /tmp (default)
and than does a 'restore -p' to pack them in big files and place these
files in /usr/sys/inst.images. It's much more easier to use 'dd' to
copy the files directly from the tape to disk. The only thing you have
to take care about it the naming. If all images are copied run 'inutoc'
on the directory were you placed your files this will create the
table of contents files '.toc'.
