Linux as fax server for win98 machines?

Post by Scott Dugui » Tue, 29 Feb 2000 04:00:00

I've been looking for some Linux fax software and I'm a bit confused about
what package I should use, if anything will work for me at all.  Here's what
I'd like to do:

I have a Linux machine doing IP Masquerading for three windows machines.  I
would like it to also act as a fax server for the windows machines.  I would
have no need to send faxes from the Linux machine itself.  I would like the
process to be as simple as possible for the windows users.  i.e. - it would
be nice if they could print to a fax print driver and it would take care of
it.  If not, simplicity would still be a nice feature of the windows client
software.  I would not need to receive faxes, only send them.

I've had a look through some of the various options but I was hoping
somebody has done this sort of thing and could narrow it down to a couple of
applications I could try out.

I almost forgot - I'm using Redhat 6.1 with Gnome.

You might try HylaFax from SGI. It's freeware.

RPMs are available for the software, and there's at least one free
Windows client.

1. SAMBA - Win98 Machines and ICS through Win98 ok - no Windows network in linux

I've looked throught the messages and tried most - bottom line is that the
Linux machine keeps coming up with the message invalid user name or
password. I've got the same user name installed on the Win98 machine and the
linux machine. I have case set to insensitive. I set the registry in Win98
to enable plain text and the corresponding entry in the smb.conf file
(encrypted password=no). I added the statement nullpassword=yes to the
smb.conf file.

What do you have to do to see the windows machines??? BTW the linux machine
has no trouble using the Win98 ICS; dials on demand and all that; so the
network is working fine other than no ability to see the Windows 98
computers other than the windows drives on the dual boot machine I'm using.
